Tiptree Choral Society:

Saturday 18th May 2019

St Luke’s Church, Church Road, Tiptree, CO5 0SU at 19:30

This Spring, Tiptree Choral Society will perform two classical works that ‘bookend’ the 18th century: from its first decade, a young 22-year-old Handel’s setting of Psalm 110, ‘Dixit Dominus’ and from its last, a 64-year-old Haydn’s mass, ‘Misse in tempori belli (Mass in time of War).

Dixit Dominus is a dramatic, energetic work, with vigorous cascades of notes, martial-like chant, and simple melody – a ‘showoff’ piece written to impress. It’s a challenging and thrilling choral work, well worth a listen. By contrast, the dramatic military sounds in Haydn’s Mass generate a sense of foreboding – he wrote it when Austria was at war with France - but ends with a fervent prayer for peace. Five soloists: Annabel Malton, Joanne Webber, Elouise Waterhouse, Michael Savage and Victor Sgarbi and organist Jonathan Lilley join the choir for this concert, conducted as always by Malcolm Boulter.

Tickets (£12, students £6, accompanied children free) will be available to reserve from the beginning of May – Tel 01206 734625 – and on the door on the night.
