Tiptree Choral Society’s French Connection

Friday 11th May 2018

Saturday 12th May 2018

At 19:30

11th - St Botolph’s Church, Colchester

12th - Tolleshunt Knight’s Village Hall, Top Road, CM9 8EU

Castelsarrasin, in Tarn-et-Garonne in the Occitanie region of SW France, is an ancient town on the banks of the Canal du Midi that can trace its origins back to 961. How appropriate then, that a choir from Castelsarrasin should be visiting the equally ancient town of Colchester in May of this year.

‘Sotto Voce’, a group of 30 singers, is affiliated to the L’Ecole de Musique at Castelsarrasin and is conducted by the Music School’s Director, Jean-Pierre Bierrié. The choir sings a varied repertoire mainly from the 19th century onwards and performs stage musicals such as ‘L’Etoile’ by Chabrier.

Tiptree Choral Society is playing host to ‘Sotto Voce’ from May the 9th - 13th and the combined choirs will be performing two concerts during their visit, one in Colchester, in St Botolph’s Church, and one local to Tiptree in Tolleshunt Knights Village Hall. Two of the soloists will be provided by the French choir.

In addition to independent pieces to showcase each choir, the combined choirs will be singing two works, one old and one new: Vivaldi’s ageless ‘Gloria’ and the much more recent Ola Gjeilo’s ‘Sunrise Mass’. Tiptree Choral Society performed the ‘Sunrise Mass’ for the first time last December in their usual home venue of St Luke’s Church, Tiptree and are delighted to have the opportunity to perform it again alongside the French choir. The choirs will be accompanied by an orchestra brought together by well-respected local musician, Nigel Hildreth, and by Tiptree Choral Society’s regular accompanist, David Leveridge, under the baton of Musical Director Malcom Boulter.

Tickets £12 accompanied children free.
